Installation Guide and User's Guide for DonsRC Wicked EDF motors.

Thank you for purchasing a Wicked EDF motor from DonsRC. You motor comes preassembled and ready for installation. All required mounting hardware is included with your purchase. The Wicked EDF motor and adapter was created to fit into a large variety of  popular EDF units available today.  The aluminum adapter has 3mm threaded holes on industry common 16mm and 17mm centers. The aluminum rotor plug for the Alfa EDF fan units has already been Loctited to the motor shaft. If you are installing your Wicked motor into a fan other than the Alfa EDF fan unit, the Alfa rotor plug needs to be removed and this can be done quite easily by following the Alfa Plug Removal Instructions.

EDF Installations:
Alfa EDF Units:

Installation of the Wicked EDF motors into the Alfa EDF unit is very simple. It is a true plug and play drop in design for the Alfa unit. Simply insert the preassembled motor adapter assembly into the EDF housing. Line up the OUTER mounting holes of the EDF with the OUTER set of threaded holes on the aluminum adapter, and tighten the screws. Check to make sure the motor in centered on the fan by installing the rotor and checking the clearance at each blade tip. If  necessary, loosen the screws and shift the motor slightly and retighten to get the motor centered perfectly.

XF Fan:

Installation of the Wicked EDF motors in to the XF EDF fan unit is very simple.  First you need to widen two of the screw holes (opposite side) on the XF fan to accept the 3mm mounting screws. (The stock hole size is too small.) Then simply insert the motor adapter assembly into the EDF housing and mount using the two INNER threaded holes on the adapter. Due to the small clearance between the adapter and the EDF housing, the motor should self center on the EDF housing and no adjustment should be needed to get the rotor centered in the edf unit.

Hyperflow Fan (Great Planes):

Installation of the Wicked EDF motors in to the Hyperflow Fan unit is very simple.  First you need to widen the two screw holes on the Hyperflow fan to accept the 3mm mounting screws. Then simply insert the motor adapter assembly into the EDF housing and mount using the two OUTER threaded holes on the adapter. Make sure the motor is centered in the fan unit before installing in the airplane. You can temporarily mount the EDF rotor and check for equal spacing at each rotor tip. You can loosen the mounting screws and shift the motor around then retighten the mounting screws to get proper centering.

Wattage Powerfan:

Installation of the Wicked EDF motors into the Wattage Powerfan unit is very simple. It is a true plug and play drop in design for the Wattage unit. Simply insert the motor adapter assembly into the EDF housing. Line up the mounting holes of the EDF with the OUTER set of threaded holes on the aluminum adapter. Check to make sure the motor in centered on the fan by installing the rotor and checking the clearance at each blade tip. If  necessary, loosen the screws and shift the motor slightly and retighten to get the motor centered perfectly.

Alfa Rotor Plug Removal Instructions: (photos coming soon)

To use your Wicked EDF motor in other EDF applications other than the Alfa EDF units, you need to remove the Alfa Rotor Plug from the shaft. To do this you will need a 3mm bolt about 10mm long. (The long screw will remove the plug the same way a gear puller does). Remove the included screw from the rotor plug, and thread in the 3mm x 10mm long screw. Thread it until it bottoms out on the end of the shaft. Continue to tighten the screw into the rotor plug. It may be necessary to gently grab the rotor plug with a pair of pliers to get a better hold on the rotor plug (TIP- place a rag between the pliers and the plug to prevent scratches). As you tighten the screw deeper the resistance will be high until you feel the Loctite bond break apart. Continue to thread the screw in until the plug comes completely off. Use a razor blade or an X-acto to clean off the dried Loctite off the shaft. Should you ever wish to reattach the rotor plug, a drop of green Loctite is all you need. Apply a drop to the end of the shaft, then push the plug onto the shaft until it stops. Wipe away any excess Loctite. For faster cure times, place the motor under a desk lamp as the heat from the lamp makes the Loctite cure mush faster.
